OceanGeeks, LLC, was conceived in 2005 and created in 2006 in response
to a series of studies that showed a growing gap between ocean research and
societal applications.
In one study, coastal zone managers were
asked what research they needed done to help them do their job. The list
was long. Researchers, however, mostly dismissed the items on it as “not
research” or “already done.” The realization was that “research”
means different things to different people: to the coastal zone manager, it
meant something he did not understand, some knowledge he did not have. To
the researcher, it meant something no
one understood, knowledge no one
had.
This is the gap that OceanGeeks fills: the gap between ocean knowledge
that is needed by someone and knowledge that already exists, of which there
is considerable in the libraries, journals, web, and minds and files of researchers.
It is, of course, possible that the desired knowledge does not yet exist;
OceanGeeks does not do new ocean research, but focuses on the results of
prior research. The advantage to the customer is speed, efficiency, and
availability.
Name
Geeks are knowledgeable and passionate about some
subject. OceanGeeks are, well, geeks about the ocean. Trust a geek to tell
it to you the way it is, unvarnished and direct. OceanGeeks are honest yet
tactful, and never ambiguous. If you do not understand the message, advice,
or report from OceanGeeks, the job is not yet done.
